Chiune Sugihara: This man saved 6000 Jews

Chiune Sugihara. This man saved 6000 Jews. He was a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania. When the Nazis began rounding up Jews, Sugihara risked his life to start issuing unlawful travel visas to Jews. He hand-wrote them 18 hrs a day. The day his consulate closed and he had to evacuate, witnesses claim he was STILL writing visas and throwing from the train as he pulled away. He saved 6000 lives. The world didn’t know what he’d done until Israel honored him in 1985, the year before he died.
He was often called “Sempo”, an alternative reading of the characters of his first name, as that was easier for Westerners to pronounce.

His wife, Yukiko, was also a part of this; she is often credited with suggesting the plan. The Sugihara family was held in a Soviet POW camp for 18 months until the end of the war; within a year of returning home, Sugihara was asked to resign - officially due to downsizing, but most likely because the government disagreed with his actions.

He didn’t simply grant visas - he granted visas against direct orders, after attempting three times to receive permission from the Japanese Foreign Ministry and being turned down each time. He did not “misread” orders; he was in direct violation of them, with the encouragement and support of his wife.

He was honoured as Righteous Among the Nations in 1985, a year before he died in Kamakura; he and his descendants have also been granted permanent Israeli citizenship. He was also posthumously awarded the Life Saving Cross of Lithuania (1993); Commander’s Cross Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (1996); and the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2007). Though not canonized, some Eastern Orthodox Christians recognize him as a saint.

Sugihara was born in Gifu on the first day of 1900, January 1. He achieved top marks in his schooling; his father wanted him to become a physician, but Sugihara wished to pursue learning English. He deliberately failed the exam by writing only his name and then entered Waseda, where he majored in English. He joined the Foreign Ministry after graduation and worked in the Manchurian Foreign Office in Harbin (where he learned Russian and German; he also converted to the Eastern Orthodox Church during this time). He resigned his post in protest over how the Japanese government treated the local Chinese citizens. He eventually married Yukiko Kikuchi, who would suggest and encourage his acts in Lithuania; they had four sons together. Chiune Sugihara passed away July 31, 1986, at the age of 86. Until her own passing in 2008, Yukiko continued as an ambassador of his legacy.

It is estimated that the Sugiharas saved between 6,000-10,000 Lithuanian and Polish Jewish people.

westsemiteblues:

He told an interviewer:

You want to know about my motivation, don’t you? Well. It is the kind of sentiments anyone would have when he actually sees refugees face to face, begging with tears in their eyes. He just cannot help but sympathize with them. Among the refugees were the elderly and women. They were so desperate that they went so far as to kiss my shoes, Yes, I actually witnessed such scenes with my own eyes. Also, I felt at that time, that the Japanese government did not have any uniform opinion in Tokyo. Some Japanese military leaders were just scared because of the pressure from the Nazis; while other officials in the Home Ministry were simply ambivalent.

People in Tokyo were not united. I felt it silly to deal with them. So, I made up my mind not to wait for their reply. I knew that somebody would surely complain about me in the future. But, I myself thought this would be the right thing to do. There is nothing wrong in saving many people’s lives….The spirit of humanity, philanthropy…neighborly friendship…with this spirit, I ventured to do what I did, confronting this most difficult situation—and because of this reason, I went ahead with redoubled courage.

He died in nearly complete obscurity in Japan. His neighbors were shocked when people from all over, including Israeli diplomatic personnel, showed up at quiet little Mr. Sugihara’s funeral.

mousezilla:

Tucked away in a corner in L.A.’s Little Tokyo is a life-sized statue of Chiune, seated on a bench and smiling gently as he holds out a visa.

The stone next to him bears a quote from the Talmud; “He who saves one life, saves the entire world.”

I had no idea it existed until a few weeks ago, but it’s since become one of my favorite pieces of public art.

Journal

I always feel better after a shower, but I don’t like starting with a shower because I don’t want time to go on. I want to hide and pretend that the past three years have not happened. That people are alive, that my relationship still has hope, and the world is still my oyster.

But they aren’t, and its hollow, and its not.

workingclasshistory:

On this day, 27 November 1868, a detachment of US troops under the command of General Custer ignored orders to kill only warriors and massacred 103 sleeping Cheyenne in the so-called “Battle of the Washita”. Just one of many atrocities carried out against Native Americans during the colonization of the Americas.

This is an excellent online book on the treatment of Native American by the colonists: https://libcom.org/library/bury-my-heart-wounded-knee-indian-history-american-west-dee-brown

Journal

Finished my first appointment with a nutritionist. We came up with a meal plan for an elimination diet which I’ll start in January. In the mean time I’m going to play with the suggestions so I can try out meals and hopefully not feel overwhelmed when I actually do it.

I’ll be meeting with her the first week of January to go over things when I start the diet, and then the last week of the month to start reintroducing foods.

Overall the appointment was informative. It was two hours long; we went over my history with eating, my medical in regards to digestion, and my goals for doing this. We went over foods, why certain foods may be setting me off versus others. I showed her my suspected eczema - which primarily covers my torso. Her eyes widened when she saw it. It will be interesting to see if it diminishes during the elimination diet or not.

Journal

My body is so annoying. We’ve had the foster for only a week and I’m already crashing so hard. I know it’s from the stress of having two dogs and it makes me so sad.

I’m also frustrated with PG because of her barking. Its always been an issue but since getting the foster it’s gotten worse. She does it when she’s excited, when jealous, when he does something wrong/gets scolded (it looks like she’s tattling on him or defending him), she’ll bark because he barked but unlike him she continues and eventually he starts again (which prolongs her barking).

The rough housing I can deal with, but her high pitched barking grinds on my nerves. And she gets herself so worked up, forget about giving her a command. She makes it hard to give the foster commands because she distracts him to play or distracts me because of barking.

I have no clue how to tell her to stay, tell him to come and not have her follow. When I correct her she gets annoyed and barks at me - like always.

My body is crashing. Thankfully my sinuses held together for the night, because the previous two I had to sleep part of the night without my vent.

There’s things I want to do today but I’m not sure if I’m leaving the house. Not this morning at least …

Journal

Wanted to give an update about my application to foster dogs.

I was approved and we picked up our first dog on Tuesday. He’s a sweetheart who immediately took well to our dog; I’ll call her PG for “pretty girl.”

PG was a little confused when she realized he was staying overnight, but because of changes we made to our routine we haven’t had an issue since the second day. They’ve really taken to each other which makes my heart melt. Tonight they were practically cuddling! She let the foster lay so close he could lick her face.

She’s going to miss him when he leaves. She enjoys having a play buddy immensely, and this is the first time I haven’t worried about her not getting walked enough because playing with him tires her out so much. Today I was gone for most of the day so he was in his crate, and when I got home she was waiting for me to let him out.

Inuit children at boarding school

lastrealindians:

Inuit children at boarding school. The sign on the wall behind them reads, “Please do not speak Eskimo.” (1914)

paradelle:

This reminds me of how whole sects of complex Inuktitut dialects were wiped out by Euro settlers. There were hundreds of different and diverse dialects in Canadian Inuktitut languages alone, and a chunk of that was wiped out during early 20th century. That language is already on the brink of collapse (only 35,000 or so now loosely speak it).

They also took away not just their language, but their surnames, and replaced them with ID-numbers. As if taking their children and capturing them into residential schools (where they were systematically gaslighted, sexually abused and experimented on the regular) wasn’t enough, an Inuit child’s name was legit changed to something like “Annie E7-121.”

So I’m failing at the whole “not eat processed foods” in that I’ve stopped eating canned and frozen meals but I love sweats.

I bought a pack of Keebler Fudge Double Stuffed cookies. Such a bad idea. So tasty but such a bad idea stomach-wise.

Edit: Add buttered noodles and milk to that list.

Made myself boiled cabbage and carrots for lunch yesterday. Afterwards I threw the resulting broth in my rice cooker and made brown rice for dinner. Delicious ♡

Went to a local TED talk last night and have a Halloween party tonight. Unfortunately woke up with an itchy throat … I know I’m pushing myself to much but it’s my favorite time of the year!!

History about Canada's Treaty 6 and Treaty 7 with Native Canadians

iidrils:

I learned in class that the Treaty 6 and Treaty 7 agreements for the gov to give treaty Indians farming equipment + assistance to “civilize” is was actually meant to set us up for failure, because they didn’t do that, so when Natives did express interest in farming and pooled money to get equipment, they made reforms to make it harder to farm like get equipment, leave the rez, natives excluded from applying for credit, etc. And literally gave natives impossible standards that settlers were never expected to follow, so when Natives ultimately couldn’t farm bc we were set up, the gov said “well I guess they’re just naturally not predisposed to farming, and they’re not doing anything with all that land soooo we’ll take it!” and then they did it. They just took it and used this as an excuse. And that’s why Saskatchewan and Alberta have so much farmland, and whatever Natives DID get successful at farming, the settlers complained about competition and took whatever land they used away and gave it to settlers. It’s just so fucked up

In case you wanna read about this, this is from a reading called “two acres and a cow” by Sarah Carter

Read up on this, especially in case why you’re wondering why so many natives are against this whole farmcore/cottagecore thing: farming and homesteading WAS and IS used as a tool for colonization and is used against Native land claims.

downhomesophisticate:

There’s a collection at the Royal Alberta Museum of handmade farm tools from Treaty 6. Natives tried to make it all work to the point where they were making their own farm tools with whatever was on hand.

There’s also specific provisions in the Indian Act that prohibited Natives from selling their own produce on the open market (for the reasons above), forcing them to sell directly to the Agents for pennies on the dollar. It wasn’t just cereal grains either, it applied to meat, fish, and fur, too. In the case of furs, smuggling was common in the North because people knew they were getting ripped off.

Native people have been ripped off, lied to, and actively undermined for generations, while the same settler regime responsible for it peddled lies about us, about our inability to accept modernity and progress, about our primitive ways, and our inherent laziness.

Journal

Went for my monthly massage and afterwords talked to him about these patches of dry skin I have. He said to try eliminating processed foods, milk, and meat.

I’ve already eliminated processed foods, the only time I drink milk is with cereal or oatmeal - so maybe a cup a day? I rarely eat meat because of my stomach.

I went to an urgent care place a couple weeks ago about them and they said it was eczema, which my masseuse agreed.

I wonder if the reduction in stomach acid could have changed how my body reacts to food? Or it could be the medication, though I can’t find anything online contacting it to eczema.

I have appointments with my GP amd gastroenterologist in a couple months, so till then I’m keeping an eye on things.

Photo of a Blackfoot Family in 1907

iweon:

A very beautiful image of these smiley blackfoot. It seemed everything was alright…

tate-iyohiwin:

I just love how humanizing this is, it’s the first time I’ve seen us not depicted as the stoic archetype of this period

tsoki:

Pictured here are Sampson, Frances Louise, and Leah Beaver who actually were very close friends with the photographer and were regular subjects of her work. It’s amazing what happens when you view us as people rather than museum objects - you capture us as people, as friends, as lovers, as parents rather than the stoic image of genocide and colonialism in-progress.

If you’re interested in learning more about female photographers and how they aided in representing native peoples through positive representation and ethical photography, I would suggest reading “Trading Gazes.” Mary T.S. Schaffer and other influential female photographers, and friends, of native peoples are given some much-needed recognition in this book while also discussing the white woman’s place in our genocide and colonization.

Yes, that is the title of this entry. Because that’s how I feel.

It’s been a long while since my boyfriend and I went on an adventure, so we talked about going on a trip this year since we both have vacation time. But freaking stuff keeps coming up!!

Our plans to visit family fell through. Decide to visit a town we’ve always wanted to see, I finally get him to agree on dates because he already took the time off but I apparently have something on my calendar that can’t be rescheduled. F*cking hell!

Haven’t taken my meds since Saturday, so not doing well on that front.

For the first time in a long time I had gas related stomach pains. We had pizza for dinner and my stomach got hard as a rock, then after an hour or so I had this throbbing pain on the sides of my stomach.

Pizza’s one of things I shouldn’t eat anymore, but I suck at this whole “changing my diet” thing.

fran-is-trying-her-best:

Question for my fellow spoonies out there 😄

TLDR- how do I talk to my friend about being unable to drive because of medication?

I have chronic pain and I take mmj for it when I can and another pain med when it gets really bad.

My best friend also has some pain problems but doesn’t take anything for it so she isn’t ever really unable to drive because of that.

My question is how can I talk to her about my medication and why I can’t drive because of it.

I feel so guilty when I have to ask her to come to pick me up (we live 2-3 min) when we wanna hang but I really need to take my meds so I’m not in that much pain what can I do to make it easier for her and for me??

For example: today she asked me to meet her at her house at 5 but I would have to drive there after I go home from school and that’s when I need to take the medication and won’t be able to drive. It’s always so stressful and anxiety inducing to have to ask her to pick me up.

My Reply:

Is it possible to take the meds after you get to her house? How long do the effects last until you can drive again?

If you have a set schedule of when you take them and you can’t drive for an hour afterwards (say you take your meds at 5pm), two options are that she can try to schedule things after 6pm, or if your pain is low enough to still drive then then at 5pm drive over and take your meds when you get there.

There needs to be balance on both sides so by opting to take your meds when you get there (when you’re able to) shows her that your not using your meds as excuse (hopefully she doesn’t think this), or by explaining “I can meet you anytime after 6pm” gives her clear guidelines to understand. If she wants to meet before 6pm she can pick you up.

I get tired easily I have breathing issues and my body gets warn down; I'm well known for falling asleep anywhere and if I’m driving will zone out or fall asleep at the wheel. When I go out with friends and I’m not feeling up to driving -or I know I won’t be able to drive later- I’ll offer to let them drive my car so even though they’re driving I’m still contributing.

Took a mini-road trip to check out a dog show. About six hours total which is the longest I’ve driven in one day, but it was so relaxing. I took all back roads and stopped at 200+ year old restaurant for lunch. All original architecture which was beautiful.

Journal

So since my stomach is messed up again (it was finally not messed up yesterday…) I’ve decided to postpone my three hour road trip to tomorrow.

Part of me wishes I had my Vivosmart before I changed ventilators so I could compare.

I have to do more research to understand what I’m seeing, but I’m confused by how little deep sleep I get. I thought deep sleep is when your body recharges - it doesn’t seem like I get a lot of it yet I feel well rested. A part of why I changed ventilators is because I was no longer feeling rested after a night’s sleep - the settings weren’t working anymore and since the model was so old we decided it was a good time to update.

Had an appointment with my gastroenterologist today and he’s thinking I have gastroparesis - basically my stomach doesn’t empty well. I have to go for a gastric emptying test.

He was glad to hear the Prilosec has improved my bloating and appetite. Since it’s not meant to be a long term med, once we get my symptoms under control he’ll be tapering me off it and we’ll manage it in other ways.

He was saying about eating smaller, light meals through out the day. Basically, I need to rebuild my childhood eating habits. Habits that I destroyed when I was in college.

I did it! I bought a Garmin Vivosmart 4 yesterday!

I wore it last night and was happy with the information I got from it. The only thing I’m not happy with is its stress reader; it keeps saying my level is high when I’m not stressed, but that will probably correct itself as it gathers more data.

Bonus: My RoadID tags fit on it ♡ … they’re not easy to get on, but they’re on so I’m not having to wear two bracelets.

To many pieces?

I was just looking at my post about my wardrobe and added up all the numbers. I have 46 pieces of clothing on that rack … that seems like a lot.

I’ll see if I can pare it down between now and next fall. The halter tops are the only tops I dont wear all year long.

So my therapist is starting to think I have OCD since I have difficulty starting things because I hyper focus on other things I think need to be done first, or I hyper focus on not being able to do it to my imaginary standard so I shut down.

I remember during one of my first sessions with him I was telling him about my bullet journal and he asked if I had OCD and I said no. That was three years ago.

I don’t think I do … I have ADHD which can make it hard to switch between tasks, but would that explain the hyper focus till I shut down?

Either way, my anxiety meds are also used by people with OCD I guess, so they should help with that aspect as well.

Lemonade ice cubes worked! They’re more of a slightly frozen slush instead of a solid piece of ice, but they keep their shape! It melted into the tea within 20 seconds no joke; the time it took me to put the tray in the freezer was enough for it to completely liquefy.

And it tastes good.

I was complaining to a friend about how much I was pissing from the tea and she pointed out that an increase of any liquid is going to up my bathroom visits until my body adjusts to drinking more. Guess I have to stick it out.

And this is why I find it hard to start things. I don’t have the energy to do it to my expectations so why do it? I’ll do it later … and later … and never.

In an attempt to consume more liquids, I bought clementines. I’ve always enjoyed these things so it shouldn’t be heard to eat.

Journal

I wish my dog didn’t bark so much when people come over.

I wish even more that I didn’t get frazzled so easy in regards to leaving my house.

I also wish I was better with my medication because I wouldn’t have the second issue. (I’m working on this.)

Pretty sure I was dehydrated yesterday

I was helping a friend at an outdoor market and got really dizzy. It wasn’t hot out, I wasn’t in direct sunlight, but a few hours in I felt like I was on a boat. I ignored it for a few minutes, stood up and noticed my balance was off. As I walked to get food I had to struggle to walk a straight line - while hoping people didn’t notice and think I was drunk.

We ended up leaving early because I wasn’t getting better and the crowd was slow (I was going to call for a ride home).

My boyfriend cooked me pasta and chicken broth which helped.

Need suggestions:

On the way home my friend and I talked about ways I can get myself to drink more water. I don’t like the taste of it, and sometimes I don’t like the taste of tea. (I’m going to make those lemonade ice cubes today.)

We talked about drinks that have electrolytes, maybe mixing it with water to dilute them, or getting those powders that you mix in.

We have fresh lemons so to start with I’ll cut those up and throw them in water. If that doesn’t work for more than a week I’ll go on from there.

JoAnn Fabric’s has witch’s limbs that you can stick in your yard and I was *this* close to buying a set of legs because who wouldn’t want the aesthetic of a cartoon witch buried headfirst in your garden??

I need to ignore my failures with food

I went to a farmer’s market with a friend and though I was eyeing a head of lettuce (because I should eat more greens), I didn’t get it because I know I won’t eat it. I won’t put the time into cutting it up for later, and if I do I’ll forget about it until its bad.

Ex 1) The container of blue berries my boyfriend got me earlier in the week began to mold before I touched it.

Ex 2) Last time I bough lettuce I made a point to prep it into grab jars, and it failed. It was slimy and gross by the time I went to eat it *several days later* … and I just kept thinking about that.

Lemonade Ice Cubes

I did get a container of fresh lemonade! I’m going to try freezing some as ice cubes for my tea … instead of squeezing fresh lemons. It sounds weird and it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, but it’s locally made and they use glass containers that you can return, which is something I want to support.

What kind of life do I want?

 I want a life …

  • without clutter
  • with premade foods that won’t mess up my stomach
  • where I don’t feel like a failed girlfriend (my anxiety, not my boyfriend)
  • where I don’t feel guilty for not working
  • where I have motivation to do the dreams I have in my head
  • where I follow through with my ideas/gifts for people
  • where I’m satisfied with the cleanliness of my house

Journal

 Yesterday:

So last night I tried some pizza from a place that I haven’t had in a while, and man the grease! My stomach hasn’t been happy since the weekend because of Labor Day food, but last night topped it off. Don’t think I’ll be getting pizza from there again.

Today:

This morning I had tea for breakfast. I used to have tea every morning a long time ago but got out of the habit. It doesn’t satisfy my tastebuds anymore, much like how water tastes disgusting to me now. I might start adding fresh lemon juice, which means I need to buy a lemon.

How long is squeezed lemon juice good for? According to KeepTasty.com it is 2-3 days if properly stored and refrigerated. Or 3-4 if frozen.

Since I like using ice cubes to cool it down I can try making them out of lemon juice. A practical way of extending shelf life!

I can fit my everyday wardrobe on one rack! I wear these clothes all year long; I don’t keep winter-vs-summer wardrobes.

I’m left with:

  • 3 halter tops
  • 1 pair of jean shorts
  • 1 Jean skirt
  • 3 pairs of jean’s (1 skinny pair, 1 dressy pair, 1 everyday pair)
  • 2 pj pants
  • 7 tank tops
  • 18 short sleeves
  • 6 long sleeves
  • 3 sweatshirts
  • 2 accessory tops (1 sweatshirt blazer, 1 crochet top)

I have two racks and a basket that I keep my clothes, so now I can remove one rack and actually be able to empty out the basket.

The clothing I removed was sorted between “don’t want” and “unsure.” The unsure pile has been stashed away out of sight - if I go looking for an item I’ll add it back in. Next spring, the items that haven’t been added back in will be donated.

[1:16 am] I want to get off my computer and do things around the house. But I also want to work on my story stuff. I got on this computer around 10:30am and have yet to even open the darn thing … I looked at vintage advertisement to use for my Tumblr icon and read articles. I never log on and immediately start working on what I originally plan on working on.

[6:10pm] Went through some stuff in the basement with my boyfriend. Stuff that I need to drop off is in my car, and some of the garage sale stuff is in the garage. Went through my movies again and got rid of another stack. We’ve agreed on what we’re doing in the dining room, so once all the garage sale stuff is out we can move our old table into the basement.
